Israel had already claimed to have killed the head of Hezbollah in an airstrike in the southern suburbs of Beirut one day earlier. This would deal a severe blow to the organization as it struggles to contain an increasing barrage of Israeli attacks.
The passing of Nasrallah is a serious setback for both Hezbollah and its purported Iranian supporters. He was a key player in the "Axis of Resistance," which Tehran supported and which helped spread Iranian influence throughout the Middle East.
Hezbollah's armed and financial sponsor, Iran, claimed that the same strike claimed the life of a top Revolutionary Guard Corps member. General was reported by IRNA news agency.
According to the news outlet IRNA Nasrallah was murdered in the strike that also claimed the life of General Abbas Nilforoushan, the deputy head of the Guards operations.
Hezbollah released a statement saying, "Sayed Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary General of Hezbollah, has joined his great, immortal martyr comrades whom he led for about 30 years."
Along with other members of the gang, he was allegedly killed "following the treacherous Zionist strike on the southern suburbs" of Beirut.
Following Hezbollah's announcement, AFP journalists heard a bystander exclaim, "Oh my God!" and saw women sobbing in the streets.
Hezbollah declared that it would keep fighting Israel "in defense of Lebanon and its steadfast and honorable people, as well as in support of Gaza and Palestine."
